Apple this week has added another product to its obsolete category: the sixth-generation, Apple Watch-esque iPod nano. In being obsolete, the device is no longer supported by Apple customer service for repair or servicing. This shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise., though Apple regularly adds older products to its “vintage and obsolete” product category and it discontinued the entire iPad nano and iPod shuffle brands earlier this year. Now that the sixth-generation iPod nano is formally obsolete (via MacRumors), Apple is not obligated to provide support except in California where state law requires extended coverage....

Apple has just released iOS 14 beta 3 for developers, and while we are still looking for what has changed, we have already found some visible updates to the Music app and Apple Music. What most users will notice after updating to the latest version of iOS 14 is the new Music app icon, which comes as a surprise. The new icon has a gradient with shades of red instead of the white background, which is somewhat similar to the old Music app icon on iOS 8....

Apple is currently in the middle of building its latest campus in Austin, Texas. The facility will initially be home to 5,000 Apple employees but expand over time to house 15,000. Now Apple has just had a revised plan for the campus approved that sees a 192-room hotel added to the project. Reported by culturemap, Apple’s original plans for its new $1 billion Austin campus didn’t include an on-site hotel. But now, news has surfaced that a revised plan was approved by the City of Austin at the end of April and it includes a new 192-room hotel with a six-story design and 75,500 total square feet....

Apple partnered with singer and actress Olivia Rodrigo earlier this month to promote her new song “Brutal” with various digital masks created on the iPad with Procreate and Apple Pencil. Now that the “Brutal” music video is available, Apple made a short clip highlighting that it was “Made with iPad.” Apple’s 30-second clip shared on YouTube shows parts of the “Brutal” video clip by Olivia Rodrigo, who appears “wearing” the digital masks created on the iPad....

Update: iOS 14.5 beta 8 is also now rolling out to public beta testers. Apple has released iOS 14.5 beta 8 to developers, coming one week after the release of beta 7. iOS 14.5 packs a variety of new features, including the ability to unlock your iPhone using Apple Watch and new Siri voices. This comes after Apple officially announced its April 20 event, where we expect Apple to formally announce the release of iOS 14....

Running alongside the iOS 15 beta and more, Apple has seeded developers with the latest beta of iOS 14.7, watchOS 7.6, and macOS 11.5 today. Update 6/15: Public beta 3 for all of the releases are now available. Following WWDC and the release of the first iOS 15, macOS 12, watchOS 8 betas, Apple has continued on with the launch of the most recent iOS 14, watchOS 7, and macOS 11 betas....

Apple reported this week that it sold 8.92 million iPads in the most recent quarter which is down from 10.2 million iPads sold in the same quarter a year ago. New data from TrendForce shows that Apple is still number one among the top five tablet brands, however, as global tablet sales dropped 9.3% year-over-year. The report also believes Apple could have a positive quarter now with the newly released $329 9....

As pointed out by MacStories, Apple recently removed trials for the iWork suite and Aperture 3 from Apple.com. The webpage formerly home to the iWork trial now includes a message informing users that iWork apps, such as Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, are available through the Mac App Store. Apple removed the trial for a short while last year before returning it; however, the company also informed users last month that the iWork....

The first time Apple showed off its Continuity Camera in iOS 16 and macOS Ventura at WWDC, it used a special mount from Belkin to mount iPhone to the top of your Mac’s display. Now ahead of macOS Ventura launching on October 24, Apple has started selling the slim Belkin mount. The new product is called the “Belkin iPhone Mount with MagSafe for Mac Notebooks.” Along with the handy foldable clip that allows it to quickly mount to the top of your MacBook, there’s a ring grip that makes it handy to use outside of Continuity Camera too....

iMessage Uses End-to-End Encryption to Send and Receive Messages Apple’s iMessage for iPhone, iPad, and Mac always uses end-to-end encryption. Only the sender and receiver of the messages can see their contents. Photos, videos, and other file attachments are also encrypted. What’s more, Apple’s FaceTime service also uses end-to-end encryption for voice and video calls, too. This means that Apple and its employees cannot see the contents of the iMessages you’re sending and receiving—even if they wanted to....

Last week on our sister-site Electrek, we reported on Faraday Future (FF), a well-funded California-based startup looking to invest $1 billion to build an electric vehicle factory in the US. Due to the company refusing to disclose its CEO or investors, some media outlets have been reporting that it could be a front for Apple’s Project Titan. But it isn’t likely for Apple to have any involvement with the company since everything points to it being backed by the Chinese technology company LeTV....

Apple Music Connect, a social interaction feature between artists and listeners that was a cornerstone of the Apple Music launch last summer, will be demoted in an iOS 10 overhaul this fall. Apple Music Connect was designed as a major component of the Apple Music service that would spur usage by allowing artists to share photos, videos, and audio while on tour in addition to allowing Apple Music listeners to comment and like posts....

Yes, Apple Music gives free trials for users signing up on the platform for the first time. New users get a free month; certain plan subscriptions get up to 6 months free. Initially, when it launched, new users got up to three months free, but they low-key made a change this year by reducing it to a month for new users. All new users are eligible for a month of free access to the streaming platform, and you could either cancel before the free trial is up to avoid being charged or go ahead after the free trial to keep subscribing to one of their monthly plans, which include Voice – $4....

Apple has overhauled the Apple Music Replay experience for 2022. Although it still is a web browser only experience, the Replay section now features a dynamic stories-esque design of highlights based on your listening history. See yours at replay.music.apple.com. This is a big upgrade over Apple Music Replay from previous years, and brings it closer to the dynamic interactive nature of Spotify Wrapped. However, inside the native Apple Music app, you can still only view a basic playlist of your most played songs....

Update: Two days after start selling the 24-inch iMac as a refurbished product in the UK, US customers can also buy one of the new Macs at a lower price, up to $260 in discount here. Four months after being released, the 24-inch iMac with M1 chip is now available as a refurbished option from the Apple Store in the UK. Currently, two 24-inch models are being sold — one in pink and another in green....

Just as it looked like the iPod-related class action suit against Apple was getting interesting, Eddy Cue arguing that competing music stores had effectively hacked the iPod, it now seems the case is in danger of collapsing. Apple’s lawyers have written to the judge to say there is no evidence that either of the two plaintiffs owned iPods during the time affected by Apple’s action to remove non-iTunes songs from iPods … The NYT reports that Apple had checked the serial numbers of the iPods owned by the plaintiffs and determined that both were purchased after the period affected by the class action....

Apple is reportedly ramping up its efforts to design its own radio chip, which would free it from the need to buy these from either Qualcomm or Intel. The latest report builds on two earlier ones, and suggests that the project now has a much higher profile within the company … It was first suggested in November that Apple was working in an in-house design for radio chips after the company was found to be hiring chip designers in Qualcomm’s home base of San Diego....

Apple has released the fifth developer betas of iOS 14.7 and iPadOS 14.7 today. The company is also rolling out watchOS 7.6 developer beta 5, as well as tvOS 14.7 developer beta 5.
