Apple has just published a new user guide that details what life would be like for iOS users if Apple were forced to allow the sideloading of third-party apps. The report, which was published this morning, is called Building a Trusted Ecosystem for Millions of Apps and describes Apple’s view on the importance of having a curated and managed App Store be the only way that iOS devices can download new apps....

Apple has just begun seeding out the first 10.2 beta update for the Apple TV out to developers today. We’ll update the post below with any new discoveries. After yesterday’s release of the performance-focused tvOS 10.1.1 software update, today’s 10.2 beta update for the Apple TV includes some new admin-level features for the device. The update today enables enrolling Apple TVs into Apple’s Device Enrollment Program and even expanding Mobile Device Management onto the Apple TV....

Digitimes has shed more light on CEO Tim Cook’s early December announcement that a Mac line’s production will move to the United States in 2013 courtesy of a $100 million investment. According to the hit-and-miss publication this evening, Cupertino-based Apple will move the production of its Mac mini to the U.S. (and not the Mac Pro, as previously theorized.) The infamous Foxconn will be responsible for manufacturing it, moving away from its traditional Asia and South America locale....

Music streaming services, Apple Music included, lost over 1 million subscribers in the United Kingdom in this last quarter, according to a survey. Younger consumers are the ones dropping subscriptions the quickest. A report by Kantar shows that over a million music subscriptions have been canceled in the United Kingdom, as people say they want to save money. According to the survey, Apple Music had 12.4% new subscribers in the UK last quarter....

Apple today updated its website listing supported CarPlay vehicles to note that the feature is now available in over 200 models, up from the 150 vehicles the site previously listed. While noting the 200 vehicle milestone, Apple has added 50 new models to its list of supported vehicles, including a number of upcoming 2017 models… Among the 50 new models added to the list of supported vehicles today are new and upcoming offerings from Audi, Honda, Maserati, Kia, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, and Volkswagen....

Customers receiving their Apple Watches today are being offered online personal setup appointments in emails being sent out by Apple. We first reported last month that these at-home personal setup experiences would be offered. Apple was not initially expected to offer personal setup for the Sport model, but now appears to be offering the experience for all models … My email arrived in the early hours. Appointments were available beginning this morning, with further slots available up to May 7th....

Apple has quietly opened a new repair program for iPhone 6s and 6s Plus devices that experience problems powering on. Affected devices that are eligible for the program will be repaired free of charge. First reported by Bloomberg, Apple opened the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus repair program today and said that the inability to power on the affected iPhones is due to a “component that may fail.” The repair program “covers affected iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus devices for 2 years after the first retail sale of the unit” which means owners will be covered until August of 2021, depending on their purchase date....

Earlier this month, we reported on what fans of The Office had originally believed to be a spin-off revival, noting that it actually looked like something involving Apple. Today, that project has officially been released in the form of an ad for Apple subsidiary FileMaker… The ad stars actors Kate Flannery, Leslie David Baker and Paul Lieberstein who all had key roles in The Office. It somewhat follows the format of the failed spin-off of The Office, called The Farm....

Earlier this week, a security researcher detailed how the Zoom video conferencing app installed a hidden web server on Macs, leaving users vulnerable to having their webcams hijacked. Now, TechCrunch reports that Apple has pushed a silent update to macOS to remove that hidden web server. Apple confirmed to TechCrunch that it did in fact push the silent update to Mac users, and that the update does not require any user interaction to install....

Alongside iOS 16.2, the latest update for Mac is now available for all users. macOS 13.1 comes with the new Freeform app, end-to-end encryption for Messages, Photos, backups, and more in iCloud, and a variety of bug fixes. macOS 13.1 is rolling out now, head to System Settings > General > Software Update to see if it’s showing up for your Mac. The two major updates with the release are Advanced Data Protection – which brings end-to-end encryption to a total of 23 iCloud categories – and the launch of Freeform....

Along with the updates released earlier today, Apple has now released macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 to the public. With this release, Apple is touting AirPlay 2 within iTunes (which requires a separate update to version 12.8). This means iTunes will have more reliable AirPlay playback with less latency, and stereo paired HomePods are now recognizable in the main AirPlay switcher. Before, iTunes would display all the HomePods separately (separating left and right stereo pairs for example) in the main switcher and only support remote control in the ‘Switch To:’ menu....

Apple today has released the sixth developer preview of OS X 10.11 El Capitan. Just last week the company released beta 5 to developers, although the update appeared to be very minor and didn’t include any noticeable changes. It is likely that this new beta has a similar focus, with Apple working mainly on under-the-hood bug fixes and improvements. The update carries the build number 15A244d. We’ll update this post with enhancements as they are discovered....

Tim Cook and Apple have had a very public relationship with President Trump during his term thus far. Cook has had several meetings with Trump and various members of his administration, and new numbers revealed late last night show that Apple has spent a record amount of money lobbying Trump… As reported by Recode, Apple spent $2.2 million between April 1st and June 30th lobbying Trump. That number is nearly double the amount the company spent lobbying President Obama during the same period last year, during which it spent $1....

Over the last few days, Apple has started to heavily tout its contributions to the United States economy. During the company’s earnings call yesterday and again during an interview today, Tim Cook talked up Apple’s influence, and now Apple has launched a new website that breaks down its United States economic outreach… On the website, Apple describes its contributions to the United States economy. For instance, the company touts that it has created some 2 million jobs, 450,000 of which are through its United States-based suppliers....

In a recent update to its supplier responsibility pages, Apple has listed Quanta Computer USA as a final assembler of its Macs. One of the locations of Quanta’s final assembly is 44350 Nobel Drive Fremont, Calif., indicating that some Macs are or will be built in the facility. These are facilities where Apple products are assembled and packaged for distribution. . Apple CEO Tim Cook noted in an interview with NBC’s Brian Williams late last year that Apple would invest $100 million to move at least one of its product lines to the United States....

I described the Apple Mail bug I experienced with my new MacBook Pro, which I was relieved to find was not a hardware fault but rather a macOS bug affecting both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It has rendered Mail unusable for now, which led to me trying – and really liking – the Spark email client. I used to try out new email clients on a somewhat regular basis, just to see what was out there, and I have used a couple of third-party apps for extended periods – Postbox being one and Airmail another....

Alongside its announcement of Apple’s quarterly earnings, its first revenue decline since 2003, Apple has also announced latest numbers for Apple Music, its $9.99 per month streaming music service. The company says it now has 13 million paying subscribers, up from 11 million in February. This compares to about 30 million subscribers to leading competitor Spotify, although the service obviously had a multi-year headstart over Apple’s streaming service, which launched last June....

Apple has named the top 25 apps infected by the XcodeGhost malware, stating that “the number of impacted users drops significantly” for other compromised apps. Most security researchers now agree that the total number of infected apps is in or around four figures, with many of them still present in China’s App Store … Apple states that it is working with developers to get clean versions of the apps back into the App Store, with eight of the most popular apps not yet restored, including Angry Birds 2 and China Unicom’s Customer Service app....
