Nikkei carries the report. The moves are being prompted by uncertainties over the eventual outcome of the Trump-initiated trade war with China, with 25% tariffs on all goods imported into the US from China still a possibility. HP and Dell, the world’s No. 1 and No. 3 personal computer makers who together command around 40% of the global market, are planning to reallocate up to 30% of their notebook production out of China, several sources told the Nikkei Asian Review....

Apple has shared two new videos highlighting how to use its new Portrait Lighting feature that iPhone 8 Plus and soon-to-be iPhone X customers can use. The short how to videos are in the same style as Apple’s other recent Apple Pay videos with clear, simple steps explained with text and screenshot footage with punchy, upbeat electronic music. Apple has sent an email to customers who recently made in-app purchases on their iOS devices informing them that any purchases made by a minor were subject to a refund. This is the latest in a series of steps Apple has taken to ensure that children do not make unauthorized purchases on a parent’s device or iTunes account. The email tells customers that if they suspect a purchase was made by a minor, they can request a refund by logging into their iTunes account and reporting a problem with the purchase:...

The beta testing process of macOS 11 Big Sur continues today, with Apple releasing the tenth beta of the operating system to developers. This comes as we inch closer towards a final public release of Big Sur, perhaps as early as next month. Apple today released the trailer for its next original movie for Apple TV+ entitled The Greatest Beer Run Ever. The film premieres on September 30 and stars Zac Efron as Chickie. Chickie embarks on a journey to the frontlines of Vietnam, to bring beer to the soldiers serving his country. The plot is incredibly based on a true story, where John ‘Chickie’ Donohue in 1967 really did set out on a quest to give his friends moral support — and some American beer....

At last night’s ADC Awards in New York City, Apple was honored for their work on last May’s ‘Barbers’ ad, a 1-minute piece promoting Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 Plus. Each year, the ADC (Art Directors Club of New York) celebrates leaders in creative communications. The most prestigious award given is the Black Cube for Best In Show. Apple and production company Furlined not only picked up the Black Cube, but a Gold Cube award for Best In Motion And Film Craft as well....

Apple’s annual Back to School sale in Australia and New Zealand has gone live with a promotion for qualifying students to receive Apple Store credit with the purchase of a Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Similar to last year, the Back to School sale includes the usual education pricing on Macs and iPads, but this year Apple is including Apple Store gift cards rather than App Store gift cards like last year....

Update: 2013 FileMaker Developer Conference registration now open. Apple subsidiary FileMaker Inc. announced today that its FileMaker Go iPhone and iPad apps have surpassed 500,000 downloads. FileMaker’s Vice President of Marketing and Services, Ryan Rosenberg, said the milestone “demonstrates FileMaker’s position as a leading platform for development and deployment of custom business solutions for iOS,” noting businesses are using FileMaker to “manage everything from sales contacts to medical information on iPads and iPhones....

Patently Apple analyzed a new patent application from Apple from last week which details several improvements for children’s books in iBooks through the use of new gestures: You could also press and hold a beginning and last word in a phrase to bring up the presentation of media content related to the phrase. Still images could be used to explain nouns and short clips would illustrate and define verbs, the document states....

Research firm Gartner just released its estimates for PC shipments in the Western Europe region during the holiday quarter, and only Apple and Asus made any meaningful progress, with Apple recording the strongest gains in France and the United Kingdom. While the Mac maker remained absent from the Top 5 rankings in Western Europe and Germany, it was a sole first-tier PC brand to grow sales in the United Kingdom during the holiday quarter....

Apple has today launched a company Twitter account for help, customer support and iOS tips. Although Apple manages some support accounts for parts of its business, like Apple Music, this is the first time Apple has launched an account that covers its entire product range. @AppleSupport is already verified, confirming its validity as an official Apple support avenue. On its Twitter bio, @AppleSupport describes itself as a place to ‘provide tips, tricks and helpful information when you need it most, and if you have a question, well – we’re here to help with that too’....

Apple has today shared a trailer for a new special episode of Carpool Karaoke that will be released this week. The latest installment is in promotion of the upcoming comedy film Tag that stars Jon Hamm, Ed Helms, and Jeremy Renner. The minute long trailer for the special Carpool Karaoke episode reveals some of the tracks the trio will sing in the full episode to be released this Friday, June 15th....

Apple today has released the second developer beta of macOS Catalina 10.15.2, following yesterday’s release of the second beta of iOS 13.3, tvOS 13.3 and watchOS 6.1.1. Apple does not specify what’s new in the update, but it likely focuses on performance improvements, security updates, and bug fixes. Developers can update to the latest beta through System Preferences if they’re already enrolled in the Beta Program. A public beta release should be available later this week....

Apple first showed off the next-generation software for its smartwatch earlier this year, revealing that it would allow the wearable devices to run native applications directly on the watch, vastly improving performance and allowing apps to interact with the watch hardware in new ways. Following a significant delay due to a critical bug, watchOS 2 is out now and can be downloaded for all Apple Watches through the companion app on the iPhone....

Apple has confirmed its iPhone 12 event for next Tuesday, October 13, at 10 a.m. PT. The tagline for this year’s event is “Hi, Speed,” and paired with the accompanying graphic, it’s already sparking quite a bit of speculation about what Apple could have in store for the event. The October 13 event invite is a dark blue color with orange and blue exploding circular rings around the Apple logo. The most obvious speculation can be drawn simply from the “Hi, Speed” tagline....

AnandTech is out today with its full review of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. As usual, the site’s review includes a detailed look at the performance of the new devices. This year, Apple touted that the new A13 processor would be 20% faster than the A12, a claim now corroborated by AnandTech. During its testing, AnandTech found that the A13 processor is 20% faster than the A12 processor used in the iPhone XS and iPhone XR....

Apple has been slowly updating its Apple Stores around the world with the major new redesigns led by Jony Ive, during a redefining of the retail stores as ‘town squares’ by Angela Ahrendts. The new look will now make its debut in Australia for the first time later this month, with a new Apple Store in Chadstone opening November 24. The new Chadstone Apple Store replaces an older retail location in the same city....

Apple has finally made a public statement on the Lodsys matter. According to the Loop, Apple says that Lodsys has no claim to patent infringement because Apple has already purchased indemnity from Lodsys. While it is good to hear Apple finally come out with a statement on the matter, it doesn’t seem like the end of this case for everyone involved. Interestingly, we’ve been hearing that Apple is offering to help protect indy developers with representation against Lodsys....
