After releasing the golden master to developers earlier this week, Apple is releasing iOS 13.5 to the general public today. The update brings quite a few changes and new features prompted by COVID-19, including the Exposure Notification API, Face ID enhancements, and much more. Apple and Google have been developing the Exposure Notification API with close guidance from public health officials. When a user enables the feature and has an app from a public health authority installed, the device will regularly send out a beacon via Bluetooth that includes a random Bluetooth identifier....

While not particularly popular among fans and critics, Apple’s Carpool Karaoke series has received an Emmy nomination today, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Apple’s long-awaited Singapore retail location finally has an opening date. The store is Apple’s first in Singapore and is set to open May 27th, a week from this Saturday, at 10AM, according to a new report from The Straits Times. The report notes that Apple Store employees were seen changing the banner on the front of the store to reflect the new opening date, seen in the image below, while employees also confirmed operating hours for the location....

Flume, an electronic music producer from Australia, recently took to social media to announce two new documentaries coming to Apple Music. The Australian electronic music producer has been making waves over the past few years for his unique genre-bending sounds. The first documentary, Flume: When Everything Was New, will probably focus on the artist’s meteoric rise into his music space. The second documentary, Sleepless: The Story of Future Classic, could have a mix of both Flume’s career and his involvement with the independent record label Future Classic....

Apple is continuing to build its arsenal of original content. Deadline reports this evening that Apple has won world rights to a new documentary called “Songwriter” that highlights the life and career of singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran… The report says that Apple paid somewhere in the “low to mid-seven figures” for world rights to the documentary. The company is said to be planing a release that includes both a theatrical component as well as a release on “Apple’s multiple platforms....

Mac4Ever is reporting that Apple has confirmed that the Apple on Campus program, allowing students to buy significantly discounted Macs and accessories via their college, is no longer available in either Belgium or Switzerland. The confirmation was provided in a one-line response by Apple Switzerland. Yes, Apple on Campus was stopped. However, the Apple Education Store discounts are obviously still valid … The discounts available through the Apple Education Store are lower than those available when buying through the Apple on Campus program....

A jury in San Diego, California has ruled that Apple must pay WiLan a total of $85 million for patent infringement, as reported by Bloomberg. This was a retrial of a case from last year in which WiLan won $145 million, a ruling that was set aside by U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw. The two patents at the heart of this infringement case cover ways to make phone calls and simultaneously download data....

First launch the Mac App Store and find OS X Lion. It will be located on the right hand side under Quick Links. Click the download button. After clicking download, you’ll be taken to Launchpad (if you’re already using Lion). This will take some time, so you might want to do something else and come back to it awhile later. Once it’s done downloading, go to the Finder and look for the Install Mac OS X Lion icon in the Applications folder....

While Apple itself doesn’t break out Apple Watch sales numbers due to competitive reasons, we can usually get a good idea of performance from analytic companies. Now, Strategy Analytics is out with its latest numbers, reporting that Apple sold 3.5 million Apple Watch units during the most recent quarter… According to the data, global wearables shipments rose to 22 million units during Q1 2017 (Apple’s fiscal Q2), up 21 percent from 18....

While Walmart remains among the list of stores stubbornly resisting Apple Pay, the retail giant is slowly pushing forward with its own mobile payment service called Walmart Pay. An update to Walmart’s mobile app added support for the digital wallet last month, and today the retailer announced that over 500 stores across two states now support Walmart Pay at checkout. Starting in 110 locations across Walmart’s home state of Arkansas and another 480 stores across the giant state of Texas, the retailer says Walmart Pay is now available at any checkout line within supported stores....

We have received several reports that users are experiencing repeated crashes when using the Apple Podcasts app on their iPhone today. During playback of shows, the app is inexplicably crashing as frequently as once every two minutes in what appears to be some kind of bug relating to how the Podcasts app syncs progress between devices. The issue seems to have been caused by some kind of server-side change on Apple’s part, as the crashes have only become prolific recently, weeks after Apple’s latest software update, iOS 13....

Apple has released a firmware update for the mid-2012 MacBook Air. The update attempts to resolve an issue that affects 64 GB and 128 GB models sold between June 2012 and June 2013. Apple says that the problem could lead to data loss. As this is a serious issue, the company has agreed to replace any affected drives that are unable to be updated. If the update installer detects that your drive is one of the models needing to be replaced, it will direct you to a page on Apple’s website that will allow you to obtain a replacement … Apple also warns that if you have an affected drive, you should not attempt to install any additional software or updates....

Following the release of iOS 14.2 and watchOS 7.1 to the public, Apple also released today HomePod software 14.2 and tvOS 14.2. Both updates bring bug fixes and improvements, including better home theater support for HomePods paired with Apple TV. HomePod has always been compatible with Apple TV through AirPlay technology, but now users can pair two HomePods on an Apple TV and set them as default audio devices to enjoy stereo and surround sound with Dolby Atmos....

Earlier this week, Apple released macOS Monterey RC (version 12.0.1) to developers and public beta users. With less than four days until the official release of macOS Monterey, the company has now released a revised build of macOS 12.0.1 RC. Update: Apple has also released iPadOS 15.1 RC 2. However, the new build (19B75) is exclusive to the iPad mini 6 and is not available for any other devices. While the previous macOS Monterey RC build number is 21A558, today’s build number is 21A559....

Apple may hold its annual developers conference and many press events in San Francisco, but the company’s campus is located about an hour southeast of the city in Cupertino. Despite naming its new custom font used on MacBook keyboards, watchOS, iOS 9, and OS X El Capitan after San Francisco, Apple is remaining in Cupertino for its larger Campus 2 currently being developed. But Apple has reportedly picked up some sizable office space in the city’s South Market neighborhood…...

Tim Cook’s Apple is no stranger to standing up for social issues including marriage equality. Almost a year ago to date, the company—not just Tim Cook—voiced public opposition to anti-gay legislation in Arizona which was surprisingly vetoed after weeks of public attention. The company also embraced last year’s annual Pride parade in San Francisco with an official video highlighting participation by thousand of employees and family members. There’s also Tim Cook’s widely praised essay published last year in which he first publicly acknowledged being gay—a first for a Fortune 500 chief executive....
