Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is back with more research about the upcoming mixed reality headset that will likely be announced in the coming months. According to Kuo, this device may be announced as soon as January 2023. The analyst is doubling down on another report he made in June. This time, Kuo says the market has the highest expectations for “AR/MR headset among Apple’s new products in 2023.” Kuo believes Apple’s mixed reality headset will be the company’s “next revolutionary consumer electronics product after the iPhone....

Apple has released iOS 8.1.1, a minor update to last month’s iOS 8.1 release for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The public release for iOS 8.1.1 follows a beta release to members of Apple’s developer program. Last month Apple released iOS 8.1 which introduced Apple Pay support for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users as well as the iCloud Photo Library public beta. According to Apple, iOS 8.1.1 will improve performance for older, A5-powered devices running iOS 8, namely the iPad 2 and iPhone 4s; Apple’s current selling iPod touch first released in 2012 is also powered by Apple’s A5 chip....

Apple has reportedly changed its near-term plans for the Project Titan electric car project, moving away from the development of a vehicle for the time being. After Bob Mansfield took the helm in July, Apple changed its outlook for the team according to Bloomberg. Hundreds of employees have been let go or re-assigned with the remaining members focusing on development of a self-driving autonomous car platform. In the future, Apple may return to developing its own vehicle or could partner with an existing car manufacturer....

Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller is joining Illumina’s board of directors, a company that provides technologies related to DNA sequencing for healthcare research among other services. Illumina’s press release notes that Schiller is responsible for worldwide marketing at Apple and he also recently took over responsibilities of running the App Store. As marketing chief, Schiller is one of the more public facing executives at the company having regularly appeared on stage for press events, interviews and elsewhere....

Apple opened up its new Health Records API just over two months ago to let developers create new apps and improved experiences for patients, particularly as they visit multiple doctors or health systems. This is the strangest idea, Apple has filed a patent which would turn your video game play time into a comic or eBook you could edit, read and share (presumably via your iPad). As Mr Purcher at Patently Apple puts it “At the end of the day, I see a new iLife app in the making which will associate itself with a new online Apple comic book print service.” Maybe, the patent explains that gamers are asked to make lots of choices using customizable characters in many video games....

After first being announced and previewed in screenshots at WWDC in June, Apple has officially brought its subscription music service Apple Music to Google’s Android platform. Apple Music joins the iPhone maker’s other Android apps Move to iOS and the Beats Pill+ companion app on the Google Play Store. Apple Music offers access to a large catalog of streaming music and music recommendations. Music and music videos can be saved for offline listening as well....

Following Apple’s iPad event today, Apple’s online store is now back up with details on the new Macs and iPads announced during today’s event. Almost a year ago, Apple Podcasts launched a new subscription model, which allows creators to host bonus content and ad-free versions of their shows in exchange for a monthly or yearly subscription. In a post on the Apple Podcasts for Creators page, the company urges creators to prepare for annual subscription plans. Apple highlights that it was always possible to offer monthly or yearly subscriptions, but a future software update will make it more clear....

Apple has released the latest versions of its iWork productivity suite today with 11.0 landing for the Pages, Numbers, and Keynote iOS and Mac apps. The new iOS builds feature support for precise editing controls, onscreen keyboards, the option to always open docs in edit mode, and more. Meanwhile, the new Mac versions include a new media browser, new AppleScript functionality, and more. Version 11 for Pages, Numbers, and Keynote for both iOS and Mac should be available now for all users in the App Store....

Apple has pushed out a revised version of the recently released iOS 5.1.1. The original public build of iOS 5.1.1 is labeled build 9B206, while this new build is labeled 9B208 (direct download). This is only two builds newer, and probably represents a small fix in the software. Whatever Apple needed to fix was specific to the GSM iPhone 4 (iPhone 3,1) as no revised builds for other iOS devices have been released (perhaps yet)....

This is not the first time we have received hints that Apple is working on an innovative universal remote control for controlling TV and video content. In January, we told you that Apple was researching a touchscreen remote with adaptable user interfaces. The invention would essentially allow button layouts stored in the cloud or in a device (such as a TV) to be wirelessly and seamlessly beamed to the controller’s UI....
