After previously testing in beta, Apple is pushing a new 32-bit app warning live for users on macOS 10.13.4 starting at midnight local time. The alert will appear once per app when a user launches 32-bit software for the first when running the current macOS version. The dialogue box can be dismissed with the ‘OK’ button or users can click ‘Learn More…’ to access a newly published explainer document on 32-bit app compatibility with macOS High Sierra....

As it has done in the past, Apple has released the open source Darwin code for macOS 10.12 Sierra. The code, located on Apple’s open source website, can be accessed via direct link now, although it doesn’t yet appear on the site’s home page. The release builds on a long-standing library of open source code that dates all the way back to OS X 10.0. There, you’ll also find the Open Source Reference Library, developer tools, along with iOS and OS X Server resources....

Shortly after its acquisition of Shazam last year, Apple took the music tagging application ad-free. To follow-up on that change, Apple has now removed nearly all third-party SDKs from the app as well. Apple last week released a small update to the Shazam app on iOS, with the change log indicating that the update included “bug fixes and performance improvements.” AppFigures has now discovered, however, that the update also removed nearly all of the third-party SDKs that the Shazam app was using....

Things had gone very quiet since it was reported back in June that Apple would be part of a consortium bidding to buy Toshiba’s chip-making division. This would help Apple secure NAND chips in a market in which there is strong competition for components. More recently, it had appeared that Western Digital would emerge as the successful bidder. But a new report suggests today that Apple is back in the running, this time without Foxconn …...

Apple is rolling out a new build of the iOS 11 beta 2 update first released last week. The new version includes a higher build version, 15A5304j up from 15A5304i, and appears to be rolling out over-the-air for select devices. For devices seeing the update, the new release is called iOS 11 Developer beta 2 Update 1. Apple has similarly released an updated build of the tvOS 11 beta 2 build....

Apple is gearing up to launch a pair of new retail initiatives centered around the iPhone: an upgraded iPhone trade-in program for iPhones with damaged screens, cameras, or buttons, and a new program that allows Apple Retail Stores to install screen protectors on iPhones. The Apple Store Reuse and Recycle iPhone trade-in program currently allows a customer to bring in an older iPhone model and trade it in for credit toward the purchase of a new iPhone model....

A number of iOS 13.5.1 users are reporting significant Apple Music battery drain, notable for the fact that it is often being seen when only running in the background. The issue isn’t limited to 13.5.1, as reports date back as far as April, but does appear to be affecting significantly more people in the latest public iOS version released last month … MacRumors noticed the increased number of reports. Some report that more than half of their battery usage comes from Apple Music even when they aren’t using the app....

A longtime Apple fan has posted a story on Reddit alleging that they received a call from Apple CEO Tim Cook’s office over some Apple Music app feedback that they emailed to him. The user goes by the name of heyyoudvd on the platform and their story is quite intriguing. Normally, we’d raise our eyebrows and not think much of any sort of post like this. But the user goes into so much detail and provides an overview of all of the feedback that they sent to Cook via email....

Filling a void left last year by former Senior Vice President of Retail Ron Johnson, Apple just announced that John Browett is its new Senior Vice President of Retail. Browett is leaving his job as CEO of Dixons, a major consumer electronics retail chain in Europe, to join the Apple executive team. Browett will lead all of Apple’s worldwide retail operations beginning in April. Peter Oppenheimer has been the Apple executive currently guiding the retail division since Ron Johnson’s departure, and he will likely continue to do so until Browett officially takes over in about two months....

MusicAlly notes Apple has published an extensive guide for indie artists attempting to get themselves signed up onto the ‘social network for music’, Ping. The move attempts to meet some critics who’ve panned the service for its pro major label slant. The Artist Ping – Guidelines document that gives tips on getting up and running. It includes the inevitable content policies, “no pornography, hate speech, racism, nudity or drug use”....

Apple has launched a holiday gift guide microsite today, featuring Apple products and accessories targeted at a wide variety of audiences. The list is separated into six main sections: Gaming, Photography, Music, Fitness, Learning and Travel. Naturally, Apple prominently features its own devices in the recommendations (iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, Beats headphones) alongside third-party accessories and suggested apps. For example, in the Photography category of its gift guide, Apple lists the brand new iPhone 6s as the ‘world’s most popular camera’ alongside silicon cases, the olloClip Active Lens telephoto mount, a Gorillapod tripod as well as apps like Instagram, VSCO and Darkroom....

Following a small “Device Support” update earlier today, Apple has just released macOS Big Sur 11.6.1 RC to developers. According to the release notes, this update brings security fixes to macOS Big Sur users — but details are unknown. The update comes as a surprise since Apple has not released any beta builds of macOS Big Sur 11.6.1 previously. Instead, the company is already delivering a Release Candidate version to developers, which suggests that this update will be released to the public in the coming days....

macOS Monterey beta 7 is now available for developers. As we move toward a fall release, one main feature we haven’t seen fully available to test is Universal Control. We’ll see if it officially shows up in beta 7 along with any other changes. Update 9/22: The latest Monterey beta is now available for public testers too. Update 9/21 11:02 am PT: As it turns out, there’s no mention of Universal Control being live in the Monterey beta 7 release notes....

Following the release of iOS 12.3.2 to iPhone 8 Plus users yesterday, Apple today will release the fourth developer beta of iOS 12.4. The update doesn’t yet include any visible changes for users, but it’s likely laying the groundwork for future changes. Apple is also expected to release the third beta of watchOS 5.3 to developers today. iOS 12.4 likely includes the basis for the new Apple Card launching this summer....
