We noted this week the growing importance of services to Apple’s bottom line … The company has now acknowledged this by adding the word in two places in an SEC filing this week, spotted by Business Insider. Services revenue – which includes the App Store, other iTunes sales, Apple Pay, iCloud storage, Apple Music and AppleCare – is growing faster than that from any of Apple’s hardware. Apple also added a mention of services to an paragraph about Apple’s research and development expenses in the same filing....

Apple notified developers last month about a change in India’s local payments system that would impact apps with recurring transactions. As the company is asking developers to promote payments using the Apple ID balance, Apple is now giving a 20% bonus to Indian users who add funds to their Apple ID. As noted by developer Mustafa Yusuf on Twitter, users are being notified about a 20% bonus when adding funds to an Indian Apple ID account....

London’s Evening Standard reports that Apple is to create a spectacular new UK campus in the iconic Battersea Power Station building alongside the Thames. The iPhone and iPad maker will move 1,400 staff from eight sites around the capital into what it calls “a new Apple campus” at the Grade II listed former electricity generator. Its employees will occupy all six floors of office space in the brick “cathedral of power”, which is being painstakingly restored after 33 years standing derelict on the banks of the Thames … The former coal-fired power station is one of the most recognizable buildings on the London skyline....

Mactracker, the definitive app for tracking Apple product information, received a substantial update today, on the Mac’s 30th birthday. Both the OS X and iOS versions have, for the first time, added Apple’s non-Macintosh computers to the database, including the entire Apple II line, and many early Apple monitors and accessories. As expected, Apple has pushed out an upgrade to the Retina MacBook Pro lineup. Both the 15-inch and 13-inch models were updated, and two models received price drops. Each 15-inch model received a modest processor speed bump, starting with a new 2.2 GHz chip in the base model, followed by 2.5 GHz in the upgraded version. The Turbo Boost speeds of each model are now up to 3.4 and 3.7 GHz, respectively....

Apple introduced a web version of Apple Music last year, which was available as a beta preview until April this year when the Apple Music web was officially announced. The company is now relaunching the beta version of the Apple Music website with the new Listen Now tab and more. The Listen Now tab was introduced to Apple Music with iOS 14 and Big Sur macOS to replace the For You tab....

Apple today is releasing iOS 15 beta 3 and iPadOS 15 beta 3 to developers. This comes after iOS 15 beta 2 was released two weeks ago and it brought a handful of changes to the iPhone and iPad, including a new Maps icon, SharePlay, and more. iOS 15 beta 3 and iPadOS 15 beta 3 are available to developers via an over-the-air update in the Settings app. As usual, if the update does not immediately appear for download, keep checking, as it sometimes takes a few minutes to roll out to all registered developers....

Following macOS 11.5.1 arriving at the end of July for all users with important security fixes, Apple has made macOS 11.5.2 available today with bug fixes and possibly more. macOS 11.5.2 is available for all users and should be showing up in System Preferences > Software Update soon if it isn’t already. It’s not clear what the update includes yet beyond “bug fixes for your Mac.” We’ll update this post as we learn more....

Less than a week after the last beta, Apple is seeding today beta 10 of macOS Monterey to developers. As October’s event will probably be about Macs, the company is readying the launch of its next big software update to computers. macOS Monterey beta 10 is appearing now via OTA for developers and public testers with build number 21A5552a. At WWDC last year, Apple introduced a new Car Key feature as part of iOS 13.6. The feature allows drivers to replace their physical car keys with their iPhone. An update to the Digital Key Release specification coming later this year will add support for Ultra Wideband and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity… The new update was announced today by the Car Connectivity Consortium, of which Apple is a member. Apple has released the first update to its new Clips app for iPhone and iPad. The new version improves Live Title text editing and includes a few other changes as well. Following the news that Jony Ive is leaving Apple this year, Apple has also announced that Sabih Khan has been named to its executive team. Khan will serve as Apple’s senior vice president of operations. In a press release, Apple said that Khan will be in charge of its global supply chain: Khan will report to Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. Earlier this year we reported that SACEM, the French society of authors, composers, and music publishers, noted Apple was ordered to pay around 5 million Euro in unpaid taxes for iPads sold in 2011. SACEM distributes the copie privée royalties, which are paid to Copie France for all devices capable of transferring and displaying copyrighted material. Today, PC INpact (via igen.fr) notes that a court in Paris has once again ordered Apple to pay for unpaid iPad taxes, this time around 12 million Euros for iPads sold between March and December of 2012....

Following CEO Tim Cook saying that the car industry is ripe for a major disruption, Re/code reports that Apple has hired Jonathan Cohen, Nvidia’s director of deep learning. While many only associate Nvidia with phone and computer chips, the company has recently been entering the car market, specifically in the form of autonomous vehicles. Nvidia has recently started selling its chips to car manufacturers, who then use those chips to power cameras and radars that do the behind-the-scenes work of allowing a car to drive autonomously....

Apple has made two incredibly thorough white papers available today covering the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR. These “Technology Overview” documents highlight the inner workings of both of Apple’s newest pro-grade pieces of hardware. In the Mac Pro Technology Overview, which is dated February 2020, Apple details everything you need to know about the tower machine. There are details on architecture, the physical enclosure, different configuration options, and much more....

Last month, the ransomware group REvil breached Apple supplier Quanta, gaining access to detailed schematics of past and future Apple products. The ransomware leak revealed details of the forthcoming MacBook Pro update, including specific information about the addition of new I/O options on the side. A new report from Motherboard today details how the leaked schematics are also helping repair experts learn more about Apple’s internal design. The report explains that independent repair shops are turning to these leaked schematics to help customers access data and offer additional repair services....

After a long week of exciting announcements from WWDC, the company has officially announced the winners of this year’s Apple Design Awards. As always, Apple’s goal is to recognize and promote developers that do outstanding work, whether that be in design, innovation, delight, impact, interaction, or inclusivity. There’s been a lot of speculation about the timing of Apple’s mixed-reality headset launch – and in particular whether the company will announce it at WWDC 2022. The smart money seems to be saying that it won’t go on sale until next year, with some suggesting that this means no mention at WWDC.
