Apple has just released the official build of iOS 10.1 to the general public which includes the new Portrait Mode for the iPhone 7 Plus. Update: McLaren has issued a statement in response, rejecting the report and denying any discussions with Apple about a potential investment. A separate report from the New York Times also indicates Apple is in talks to acquire Lit Motors, a startup working on a self-balancing motorcycle. Apple announced today that it is rolling out a new version of AirTag firmware with a notable privacy improvement. Here’s how to check your AirTag firmware version to see if yours has updated to the latest build. Apple, unfortunately, does not make it possible to manually update your AirTags. Instead, the company says that firmware updates will install automatically when AirTag is in range of your iPhone. This is similar to the way that Apple rolls out AirPods firmware updates....

A new report estimates that Apple’s app privacy policy – aka App Tracking Transparency – will cost social media companies almost $10B in the second half of this year. It says that’s because their unique selling point (USP) was the ability to target particular demographics and interest groups, and that now they can no longer offer that, advertisers are taking their business elsewhere … The Financial Times reports. Even very basic forms of targeting are lost when users decline permission for apps to “track” them....

Apple’s share of the smartphone market in Japan has hit 37 percent, greater than the 36 percent share in the USA, reports the WSJ. Given that most of that share was acquired before DoCoMo offered the iPhone, the prediction of one analyst doesn’t seem quite as far-fetched as it might sound. Japan is the world’s fourth largest smartphone market, behind China, the USA and India, and it had previously been predicted that the DoCoMo deal would enable the iPhone to become the market leader....

iTunes icon by Louie Mantia Apple has posted the iTunes 10.4.1 incremental update on its servers. The update, which is available via Software Update from the Apple menu, contains several improvements that make the program more nimble in certain situations, in addition to fixes for known issues such as adding artwork to songs and videos. Apple has launched a new 2TB iCloud storage tier a little over a week out from the iPhone 7 launch event. The new 2TB plan, which is its largest plan available, will set users back $19.99 a month. The timing for such a plan is interesting given the rumors of a potential 256GB version of the iPhone 7 Plus. This would double the storage of the next largest iPhone storage amount — 128GB....

Over the last week, it appears that Apple has been sending iOS users mass push notifications with Apple Music free trial offers. The notifications seem to target who were at one point an Apple Music user, but canceled their membership or never used the service beyond their initial free trial. Users took to Twitter last night to share screenshots of the various notifications Apple sent regarding Apple Music. One version of the notification touted that “We’ve changed,” while another said that “It’s not too late....

While everybody’s excited about the iOS 15 launch, Canadian Apple users have another reason to celebrate as the company now sells refurbished iPhones. As spotted by iPhone in Canada, this is the first time Apple has sold refurbished iPhones outside of the US. Canadians were already able to buy Macs, iPads, Apple TV, and other refurbished accessories and now they can get an up to $500 discount when buying an iPhone....

Although there are still quite a few fake white iPhone 4s on eBay there appears to be less than usual and that is because Apple is working to have them all removed. We have found an e-mail sent to an eBay seller of a black-to-white iPhone 4 conversion unit. Quite frankly, all the “white iPhone 4s” you see on eBay are black-to-white iPhone 4 conversion units as the white iPhone 4 doesn’t exist....

According to the Independent, Apple has informed their European iPhone carriers that the next-generation iPhone will not include Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Apple is reluctant to include the technology and introduce a new “wave and pay” system due a “lack of a clear standard across the industry.” The iPhone 5 not having NFC technology does not mean Apple isn’t working on their own NFC service for a 2012 launch....

Apple is rolling out a new TestFlight feature which enables developers to share a public URL for an app beta. Customers can simply open the link on their iPhone or iPad and automatically enroll into the beta testing group through the TestFlight app. This feature was announced back at WWDC in June but has only just started showing up for developers inside the App Store Connect interface. Previously to public links, developers had to manually ask people for email addresses and then send out invite in emails to each person individually....

Seeking to enhance Apple’s retail store divison and bring the customer experience to higher levels, new Apple Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores Angela Ahrendts is planning a fundamental restructuring of Apple’s retail stores as she prepares a series of new store openings across the globe for the second half of 2014 and first half of 2015… Ahrendts previously informed key staff that she would be shaking up the Apple Retail executive ranks, and this new organizational restructuring further alters how stores are managed....

Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is predicting that Apple’s Augmented Reality headset will launch in the second quarter of 2022. This is expected to be a development tool and stepping stone toward Apple Glasses.
